We were able to stop briefly this spring at Zion National Park on our way to New Mexico. We only spent one afternoon here but were able to get a taste of most of it, and we have some recommendations!
First of all, Zion has a shuttle system, so you must park in a designated visitor area and use the shuttle to mobilize within the park. We did not camp here, as we had all our belongings with us between jobs, so we can’t give any advice on the campgrounds within the park. There were plenty of hotel and lodge options just outside the canyon in the town of Springdale, UT.
This is what we were able to squeeze in on our one afternoon in the park:
Angel’s Landing via West Rim Trail – This is a 5.4-mile strenuous hike where you need to hold onto chains for the top portion of it due to extreme drop offs. Very scary if you have a fear of heights, but totally worth it for the beautiful views of the valley!

Riverside Walk – This is a 2.2-mile round trip easy hike at the farthest end of the park. At the end of this trail is where The Narrows hike begins. We did not have proper gear to do The Narrows this time; you need waders because you are hiking in up to waist deep water in the slot canyon at times (you can rent waders at the park’s visitor center). We were able to see the entrance of this hike and asked several hikers exiting if they would recommend it and all of them said they definitely would!
The beginning of The Narrows Trail.
Upper and Lower Emerald Pool Trails – These were moderate hikes a little over two miles combined. The water was pretty low when we were there, but still nice trails.
Emerald Pools – The water is low but if you look close enough, you can see the little waterfall.
If/when we return someday, we want to rent proper gear to hike The Narrows, camp in the park, and complete the other hikes that are offered in this beautiful park!
