Seabrook Island

With our Peru plans derailed by covid times for yet another year, Megan and I were craving for some adventure in May. We were thinking something different from our norm- and the 103rd PGA Championship at The Ocean Course popped up on our radar! We bought tickets, and after discussing the trip with my parents, all four of us were off to Charleston, South Carolina

Citrus Club

As soon as Megan and I landed in Charleston late Friday morning, we were picked up by my parents and headed downtown for lunch. We picked the Citrus Club, which is Charleston’s highest rooftop bar. It’s an upscale cocktail bar with great light bites to share among your group along with fantastic views. The rooftop is located on the eighth floor of The Dewberry, which also seemed to be a very nice hotel, and you do not have to be a guest to visit!

Middleton Place

We drove a bit north from downtown after lunch to visit Middleton Place, a National Historic Landmark preserving a microcosm of United States history. The grounds are almost as amazing as the stories are from this time period. There are multiple tours you can join when you visit, but the four of us decided to simply do a self-guided tour since we had more fun things to do!

Palmetto Carriage Works

The rest of our afternoon was spent back in downtown Charleston on a carriage ride by Palmetto Carriage Works, the oldest carriage tour company in the city. We thought this was a top-notch tour providing us with remarkable stories of the history and architecture of the “Holy City.”

The Watch Rooftop Kitchen & Spirits

Our research for another awesome rooftop bar for dinner and a sunset did not disappoint! We found The Watch, which is within The Restoration Hotel, and it was definitely the place to be for a younger crowd. We waited for about half an hour until we got our picture-perfect sunset table. The only bummer- sunset was still 2 hours away! But no bother- Megan and I enjoyed essentially some enlarged alcoholic Capri Suns while we waited.

103rd PGA Championship at the Ocean Course

Saturday was all about golf. It was the only day we got tickets for the 103rd PGA Championship, but from previous experience that’s all you really need at one of these tournaments. We arrived around 9:30 AM at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island and just the drive there was sweet. There are some crazy homes down on the South Carolina coast. As Megan and I walked the whole course over the rest of the day, indeed all 18 holes seemed to be just sitting on packed sand and it was gorgeous. It was incredibly fun to see the top players swing, especially the eventual champion Phil Mickelson! That’s because I’m a fellow lefty golfer though…

As the day dwindled to night we stopped at The Royal Tern for dinner, a fancy surf & turf restaurant located in the center of Johns Island. We had a nice meal on their screened in patio (we were pumped to sit down after standing/walking the entire day!) and off we went to find dessert!

Freshfields Village

Heading back to our Airbnb on Seabrook Island, we figured we’d find something sweet at Freshfields Village. Technically still located on Kiawah Island, Freshfields is an open-air shopping and dining complex that has it all. There’s even a green space with live music and cornhole to play. Of course, Megan sniffed out Ben & Jerry’s for dessert and everyone was content.

Seabrook Island Beach

On our final morning, we explored a little around The Seabrook Island Club, where our Airbnb was located. We drove maybe five minutes through the community before we got out and discovered a long boardwalk path that led us straight to the beach! We all took off our shoes and experienced a nice Sunday stroll on the expansive Seabrook Island Beach. There were plenty of people out walking, running, or playing with their dogs- but it never seemed busy. Definitely a good, peaceful spot to get to if you stay down here. We also enjoyed playing some pickleball on the community courts in the late morning. Just enough to break a sweat and get our bodies moving before sitting on a plane again!

Charleston Sports Pub

So that we didn’t have to eat lunch at the airport, we pulled over for one more meal in Charleston at the Charleston Sports Pub. This is your classic American sports bar with tons of TVs and nothing else to it. I had somewhat of a colossal half pound breakfast burger (that I finished, duh) while we watched Phil tee off and start his final round.

Where we decided to watch the rest of the tournament!

All in all, another short trip but a fun experience. The Charleston area, and really South Carolina as a whole, has a ton of cool things happening. The Lowcountry coast is very relaxing, and we now see why it’s a retirement hub. Special thanks to my parents for joining us on this adventure and making the most of it!

We always enjoy some time on the coast!
