Savannah

Adam and I have a goal of getting to all 50 states in some capacity and neither of us had ever been to Georgia (except for flying through Atlanta), so we made sure to pick a spot there to explore on our road trip up to Virginia. Our city of choice was Savannah (which is only two hours north of Jacksonville) and boy are we glad we chose this charming city!

Hotel Tonight

We used one of our favorite apps, Hotel Tonight, to snag a last-minute hotel in the heart of Savannah. We got a stellar deal at the Hyatt Regency with a room overlooking the Savannah River! It’s a very nice 3-star hotel with a great lobby. We were able to safely park our car filled with all our belongings in a valet garage and we were in a perfect location for our speed-exploring of Savannah.

Maple Street Biscuit Company

We woke up to the sun reflecting off the beautiful Savannah River and headed right for some southern breakfast. We chose the Maple Street Biscuit Company and we were not disappointed by their maple latte, fluffy biscuits with fried chicken, and apple butter (which apparently is a pretty big thing in the south)!

Downtown Savannah

After fueling up, we took a stroll around downtown Savannah. There are seemingly endless canopy covered streets and there are square green spaces about every two blocks in the heart of downtown. After passing through several of these little parks, we hit the largest park in Savannah, Forsyth Park. The main spectacle in this park is the fountain, but there were lots of other things happening such as an outdoor community workout class!

Riverside

After getting our park fix in, we headed back toward the river. We hit the birthplace of Juliette Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts of America, and the City Market on the way. This is a pretty big area set up with both indoor and outdoor shops and small stands. We then walked about two blocks further north until we hit the Savannah River. There’s a nice path you can take right along the river that is lined with shops and restaurants.

Leopold’s Ice Cream

We held off on getting food somewhere on the river because we wanted to save room for the famous Leopold’s Homemade Ice Cream– about three blocks south of the river. This is an old ice cream shop with some of the creamiest ice cream you’ll ever have! And everyone knows- it was the only place with a line out the door!

Moon River Brewing

Per usual, we ended our time in this beautiful city at a brewery. We chose Moon River Brewing because they have a nice outdoor urban patio and it was located very close to our hotel by the river.

Our time in Savannah sure was short, but we are glad we got to see a snippet of what this southern city has to offer. We definitely recommend this destination for a weekend getaway for an anniversary or birthday!
