Mendocino Day Trip
After being in California for a few weeks, we got the itch to finally hit the coastline. So off we went on a Saturday morning, driving west about two hours through Lake County and Jackson State Forest to arrive at Fort Bragg. The town is a great little seaside area that provides a great jump off point for exploring Mendocino County.
We started our adventure at Sea Glass Beach, which is just north of downtown Fort Bragg. The views out into the ocean are fantastic, and the trails along the coast are well defined and go on for as far as you can see. The whole reason for the name of this beach is that it used to be a junkyard, and after it closed, the glass/other metal materials that fell into the ocean eventually found their way back onto shore. Only now, the sharp shards of glass had rounded edges and were brighter than ever. Our advice is to make your way down to the sandy shores where you can dig your hand into the beach and come up with spectacular shapes and colors of glass. Unfortunately, people continue to take pieces of glass from the beach for their own collections despite conservation efforts, and the beach is slowly transforming into a normal northern California beach.

From the beach we went to discover what the Russian Gulch State Park had to offer. This park is slightly south of Fort Bragg (about 15 minutes) as you drive down highway 1. In the eastern part of the park, you go through relatively thick forest and are greeted by a couple waterfalls along the Falls Loop Trail. After you complete the loop and if you continue to head back west toward the coast, you will arrive at the Panhorst Bridge. This is an extremely gorgeous spot for a ton of photos, especially for the sunset. When we were there a wedding dinner was going on at the beach underneath the bridge, so we didn’t stay too long.

We then decided to hike up a curving road to the right side of this beach and came across the Headlands Trail, which takes you up on the cliff edges. The trail eventually leads to a huge sinkhole, called the Devil’s Punchbowl. You’ll also come across more magnificent views of the ocean bluffs and the amazing homes that sit on top. Overall, both trails we completed within this park were well worth it.

For dinner we ended up at North Coast Brewing Company, which is in Fort Bragg. This brewery has more of a family restaurant feel, so in a small town on a Saturday night it was packed. We snagged a spot at the bar after about a 10-15-minute wait and ordered a flight of beers. The winners- Blue Star, PranQster, and Old Rasputin’- went perfectly with the delicious food, and leaving satisfied, we began our trek back home to Clearlake.
