Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is a huge area (over 1.25 million acres), so there’s obviously a lot more that this park has to offer other than what we will share with you. We were only stopping by on our way through between Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon.
One of the most popular landmarks of this area is Horseshoe Bend. Glen Canyon claims to not have any “maintained” trails, but this one is very well-traveled, and they were doing construction on it when we visited, so I would consider it maintained. It’s a very short, easy hike (1.5 miles round trip), but worth it to see the unique landmark!

Another hike that Glen Canyon claims to be “unmaintained,” but it was obvious to follow was the Hanging Garden Trail. This is an easy, one-mile round-trip hike that takes you out to a “hanging garden,” basically a wall of plants. There is some shade here and it’s a good place to have a little picnic. We are eating leftovers of the best quesadilla I’ve ever had (a pesto, pistachio, tomato, chicken, and cheese delicious concoction), from Oscar’s Cafe back near Zion. Check out our Zion National Park blog for more details!

As I mentioned above, we were only passing through Glen Canyon, so these are the only two short hikes we did. We just drove by the dam and thought that was good enough, but there is a Dam Overlook Trail and a dam tour available if you are interested. Lake Powell is a popular lake in this area that we saw but didn’t have time to visit and would have liked to. As always, the more you explore, the more new things you find to explore!
