The north region of the big island has a charm of its own, filled with rolling hills and dramatic valleys created by the Kohala volcano. Just because this blog is shorter than the others doesn’t mean it’s not as impressive as the other regions of this island.
Valley Hikes
There are two main valleys on the island that are easily accessible. We started with the one furthest away from where we were staying, Pololu Valley Lookout. It had just down poured, and the flash flood warnings were starting to be lifted. It was a bit slippery hiking down into the valley, but we caught some pretty views as we went. This was a pretty quick hike for us at only 0.9 miles round trip. On our way over to the next valley, we stopped in Waimea for some açai bowls fromHina Rae’s Cafe. After enjoying our refreshing lunch, we hopped back in the Jeep to drive only about 30 min to Waipio Valley Lookout. If you have 4 wheel drive you can drive down into this valley, but we prefer to explore on foot. It’s a pretty steep incline down the road for the first half of this hike and you need to watch out for cars, but the second half is a flat road ending at a large black pebbled beach. We enjoyed taking in the dramatic walls of this valley while sitting on a log on the beach. We even spotted a waterfall spilling into the ocean on the west bank! The hike back up definitely got the heart pumping, but nothing like our hike to the highest point of Hawaii.
Pololu Valley Lookout
We sure picked an eerie day to check out this valley.
Working our way down into the valley.
The fresh rain made it a bit slippery.
This is what you’ll see if you look inland.

Hapuna Beach
These two valleys are on the east side of the north region, but there’s a great beach on the west side of this region. Hapuna Beach has delightfully soft tan sand and crystal clear aqua blue water. The waves are very manageable and there’s plenty of room to find your own spot on the beach. A short 7-minute drive north of this beach, you will find Anuenue Ice Cream & Shave Ice. We let our inner 8-year-olds come out as we ordered Hawaiian Shave Ice with an ice cream base and snow cap drizzle. We could barely keep up with the melting ice in the hot sun. Our sugar-buzzed selves took advantage of the sun and popped the top of the Jeep for our drive down the west coast.

We enjoyed switching it up with valley hikes where you descend first and the beach on this side was truly right out of a magazine! Our final Big Island blog will be the SOUTH region where we discovered more unique beaches and a live volcano!
