Aguirre Springs

On the the east of the Organ Mountains is the Aguirre Spring Campground. We did not camp here, although the sites looked nice; each had a shelter with a picnic table underneath, a flat spot for a tent, and a fire pit. If you are just looking for some day hikes, you can still park at the campground and do some cool hikes from here. This side of the mountain was our favorite because both hikes we did were awesome.

The Baylor Peak from Aguirre Springs Trail is a 5.5-mile trail with a 2,093 ft elevation gain. When you are heading up the mountain, you will pass through a fence. Right after this fence is a large open area where people take breaks; to the right is the trail heading up to the peak. This last mile up to the peak is intense. It can be difficult to follow the trail and the rocks are loose in several areas, but it is very worth it for the 360-degree view from the peak! Along the trail you will find pretty wildlife such as soaptree yuccas!

Fun fact: Their roots are so long (up to 30 ft at times) so they can adapt to shifting terrain, such as dunes. Another hike you can do from Aguirre Springs Campground is the Pine Tree Trail which is a 3.9-mile loop with 1,046 ft of elevation.

One more tip: You can use your National Parks pass at the parks on both sides of the Organ Mountains. If you don’t know about it yet, I would purchase a National Park pass for $80 if you plan to check out three or more. Parks range from $5 to $30 per day without this pass.
